Tai Chi Chuan was originally created as a martial art by San Feng Zhang at Wu Dang Mountain in China. Wu Dang Style Tai Chi was created 1500 years before the family styles (Chen, Yang, Wu, Sun) and is still practiced today at Wu Dang Mountain. Tai Chi uses the philosophies of the I-Ching, Yin and Yang and the Five Elements to create its foundation and training principles. The experience of its practitioners over thousands of years has shown that the practices of the martial art of Taijiquan can improve health, reduce stress and assist in slowing and reversing many human complaints such as high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma, stomach ailments, heart problems and anxiety. It has also proved to be effective as a set of life prolonging, healing, and rejuvenating exercises. Tai Chi when combined with Qigong can be an effective practice that can assist in increasing the quality of one’s life. Qi (“Chee”) is a Chinese term used to refer to all types of energy. It is the “vital force” behind all things in the universe. Gong refers to the accomplishment that can be achieved by steady practice and also refers to the ability to produce an effect. Thus Qigong is the study and practice of Qi. Qigong practice uses the breath, posture, movement, and sound to refine, balance and circulate Qi within the body. Through the regulation of the body, breathing, mind, qi (bio-electric energy) and shen (mental spirit) our capability to adapt to the external environment, strengthen our immune system and build-up a resistance to disease as well as reduce the many effects of the stresses in daily life can be strengthened. Qigong has been practiced for thousands of years and over that time have developed specific qigong programs for many health complaints.
